On November 25, 1980, Utah Governor Scott M. Matheson announced the appointment of Dallin H. Oaks to the Utah Supreme Court.
At the time of his judicial appointment, Oaks was wrapping up his nine-year tenure as the 8th president of Brigham Young University (BYU). He filled the high court vacancy left by the resignation of Justice D. Frank Wilkins and officially took the bench the following year in 1981. He served as a Utah Supreme Court justice until 1984, when he resigned to accept a calling to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
