HISTORICAL NOTE ON CARTOON BELOW:

Southern Baptists had a major problem with the Walt Disney Company in 1997 and voted to launch a formal boycott.

The Boycott Vote

  • On June 18, 1997, delegates at the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in Dallas, Texas, voted overwhelmingly to boycott Disney and all its subsidiaries.
  • The non-binding boycott targeted theme parks, Disney stores, movies, and the ABC television network.

Reasons for the Conflict

  • LGBTQ+ Policies: Leaders objected to Disney extending health insurance benefits to same-sex partners of employees and hosting unofficial “Gay Days” at its theme parks.
  • Media Content: They criticized the company for airing content like the television show Ellen (after its lead character came out) and distributing mature or violent films through subsidiaries like Miramax (such as Pulp Fiction). [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Perceived Shift: Convention members felt Disney had moved away from traditional “family-friendly” values into an anti-family and anti-Christian direction.
